Virtual Reality (DECO3009)

Challenge

How might we create an engaging, beginner-friendly way to teach Japanese etiquette and basic language skills beyond traditional memorisation methods? Learners often struggle to understand cultural context, which is just as important as vocabulary.

Goal

  • Design an immersive, interactive learning experience for beginners.
  • Emphasise cultural respect in Japanese communication.
  • Encourage active participation through gameplay rather than passive study.
  • Process

  • Research & Concept Development – Explored common etiquette rules and beginner Japanese learning challenges. Identified “family approval” as a culturally grounded yet accessible narrative.
  • Game Flow & Storyboarding – Mapped the player journey: introductions, question prompts, progression stages, and rewards.
  • Prototype Creation – Produced a video prototype to demonstrate the VR experience. Used existing 3D assets to focus on interaction and storytelling, not asset creation.
  • Interaction Design – Incorporated quiz-style challenges to test etiquette knowledge and language basics. Players must answer correctly to progress through stages of “impressing the family.”
  • SOLUTION

    A VR game concept where learners build both language and cultural competence in an engaging, story-driven environment. By situating lessons within a social scenario (meeting a Japanese family), the experience reinforces that respect and etiquette are inseparable from learning the language.

    OUTCOME

    • Delivered a fully developed VR game concept with a clear storyline, mechanics, and interaction flow.
    • Produced a video prototype to demonstrate the user journey and gameplay interactions.
    • Successfully showcased how game-based learning can blend language practice with cultural etiquette.
    • Received positive feedback from peers and lecturers for creativity, immersion, and clarity of learning objectives.
    • Strengthened my skills in experience design, storytelling, and rapid prototyping using existing assets.
